The TTRPG will consist of an exquisitely illustrated hardback, core book that includes rules for players to play the RuneScape tabletop roleplaying game, in OSRS gold which they build personal characters from scratch, explore Gielinor and develop thrilling and unique quests. The TTRPG core book is also completely compatible with rules of fifth edition from Dungeons & Dragons.
It is expected that the RuneScape games will be Steamforged's 12th release of a video-based game for tabletop. Other adaptations have included the Monster Hunter: World board game, which grossed PS3.4 million on Kickstarter in 2021.
The trade of virtual currencies for real-world money can be a major issue for many online games, causing disruption to in-game economies, disrupting player experiences, or turning games into pay-to-win scenarios. In RuneScape it is the case that trading its digital 'gold' is a major issue and has led to bots mine the resources, and accusations that the ability to purchase 'bonds' in the game for real-world money amounts to gambling.
In the present, Jagex has revealed plans to tackle the problem. In a blog entry, credited to "The RuneScape Team", the publisher states that "gold purchased via RWT is a concern in any online game featuring an option to trade currency", and that although its "Anti-Cheating Team has made significant efforts to tackle RWT sellers both in or out" however, they will be taking more drastic measures with immediate effect.
The company cites a "growing team and enhanced instruments", Jagex says it is not just looking for sellers of gold or other resources via RWT but as buyers. The intention is to stem the demand, and supply.
Jagex promises to begin sending "messages to players that we've identified who are involved on RWT" within "the next few hours". "For anyone who has been involved, we'd like to be clear : this is the one or only warning" said the statement.
Other measures the developer will be looking at as punishment for RWT activities are expected to include wealth removal , which essentially removing ill-gotten gains from accounts of players on a server level - and possible bans.
RuneScape's PvP feature, known as the Duel Arena, will also be subject to stricter rules. Jagex says the feature "has been a catalyst for the toxicity of this behavior" and that 38 per cent of the bans for RWT actions up to now are due to this part to the gameplay. It claims that the number of bans already amount to "thousands of bans per month".
In the end, the developer appears to be considering the nuclear alternative, saying "we're thinking about the long-term for phasing out this Duel Arena out of cheap RuneScape gold RuneScape entirely." Until then it will put in place "some small-scale steps" to improve PvP "until our development teams can deliver an extensive update that fully takes over the Duel Arena next year."
